Eggslut: Deliciously inappropriate gourmet food.

Rating: ★★★★☆ – this is a gem!

I never thought I would be able to walk into a restaurant and ask to have “the slut” served to me without getting punched in the face. Strangely enough, I did just that when I had breakfast at one of Eggslut’s locations in Los Angeles.

You ordered a… slut?

Okay, so calm your panties. While my slut was delicious, I feel like you’re not getting the complete picture. Eggslut is a gourmet food bar serving classic comfort food with a twist. The one thing all dishes have in common are eggs – hence the name of the place. When you order their signature dish, you get a coddled egg on top of some mashed potatoes served with a few slices of freshly-baked baguette. That doesn’t sound too exciting, so I imagine that’s why they labeled it “the slut”. In all fairness, it’s a simple recipe but probably the best egg dish I’ve ever had. Also, props on marketing as the peculiar name draws in hordes of hipsters trying to snap the perfect Instagram shot. And yes, this does include me.

See? That’s what a modern-day slut looks like. It’s really not as bad as they would have you believe!

What else is on their menu?

The other items on Eggslut’s menu are crafted in a similar fashion. The sandwiches provide an artsy take on your classic burger with the chefs opting to use items such as tri-tip steak and maple syrup. The downside is that the food looks amazing and it keeps you coming back for just one more bite.

I haven’t been able to try all of their menu items, but here’s my top three so far – not including “the slut” because, duh.

    1. The Gaucho.
      The official description reads “seared wagyu tri-tip steak, cage-free over medium egg red onions and dressed arugula in a warm brioche bun,” which are just fancy words to describe a burger made of angel tears and liquid gold.
    2. Fairfax.
      If they’d let me rename this, I would just call it “the Slutburger”. It has the same ingredients as their signature dish but is easier to handle as it comes with a bun.
    3. Salted chocolate chip cookie.
      Because who doesn’t love a fresh batch of cookies? Seriously though, the salt makes for an interesting combination with the bitterness of the chocolate. Totally works with the eggs.

Final verdict.

All the good food aside, there are a few downsides to Eggslut. While they excel at making great food, they fail to take into account some of their target audience’s needs. Since all of the burgers come on a homemade biscuit or brioche bun, there is really no gluten-free option available. While the bread that comes with “the slut” can be substituted for a salad, they’ve said they cannot guarantee there’s not at least some trace of the gluten present.

While traditionally these cons would have a greater impact on my recommendation, food is just not always an objective matter. The experience I had greatly outweighs any negatives I might have experienced. Just think of all the fun you can have with your awkward best friend who’s trying not to crack up while ordering. Get the slut while it’s still hot!
